A Weekend of Cascadian Zen Cumberland
Client: Adelia MacWilliam, Watershed Press, Vancouver, British Columbia
Timeline: July-August 2024
Format: 11 x 17 poster, web banner
Overview: For A Weekend of Cascadian Zen at The Abbey Studio in Cumberland, B.C., I designed a poster and web banner to promote a multi-day program of talks, readings, and workshops associated with the launch of Cascadian Zen: Volume One. The event brought together poets, philosophers, and an Indigenous elder, requiring a visual approach that could hold both intellectual depth and public-facing energy.
Design Approach: The design centers on a regional map as both a literal and symbolic foundation, situating the event within the Cascadian bioregion while providing visual structure for dense program information. Saturated color overlays, textured surfaces, and layered compositions create a sense of movement and materiality, reflecting the intensity and duration of the weekend-long gathering.
Typography plays a central role in establishing hierarchy and tone. Display headings use a bold, distressed fat-face style to command attention and convey urgency, while body text is set in a thin, vintage serif to maintain readability across a complex schedule. The Cascadian Zen book cover is integrated directly into the layout, anchoring the event visually and reinforcing its connection the publication.
