SubDuction Logo

Client: Cascadia Democratic Action / Cascadia Poetics LAB, Seattle, WA

Scope: Logo design and visual identity development

Role: Brand identity and logo designer

Platform: Print and digital applications

Timeline: August 2026

Context: SubDuction is a spoken-word and performance series at Vermillion in Seattle, presented through a partnership between Cascadia Democratic Action and Cascadia Poetics LAB. The series brings together poets, performers, and audiences for literary and cultural exchange.

The name references geological subduction, the process in which one tectonic plate moves beneath another. This process is particularly relevant to the Cascadia region, where the Juan de Fuca Plate descends beneath the North American Plate.

The project called for an original logo that would establish a recognizable identity for the series while connecting its name to the geological forces that shape the Pacific Northwest.

The Challenge: The challenge was to translate the concept of subduction into a contemporary visual identity appropriate for a spoken-word and performance series.

The design needed to convey movement, pressure, and the interaction of geological forces without relying on literal illustrations of mountains or tectonic plates. It also needed to remain legible and recognizable across event posters, promotional materials, and digital applications.

The Solution: The SubDuction logo uses typography itself to express the geological process from which the series takes its name.

The wordmark divides the name into two interacting elements. The green SUB curves downward and overlaps the blue DUCTION, suggesting one tectonic plate descending beneath another. The contrast between the curved, shifting letterforms and the more stable horizontal structure creates a visual representation of movement and compression.

Rather than adding a separate graphic symbol, the geological metaphor is embedded directly into the typography. The result is a unified wordmark in which the visual treatment reinforces the meaning of the name.

The green-and-blue palette connects the identity to the Cascadia bioregion while helping distinguish the two interacting typographic forms.

Key design decisions included

  • Typography as Visual Metaphor

Using the letterforms themselves to suggest tectonic movement, integrating the geological concept directly into the series name.

  • Overlapping Forms and Directional Movement

Curving SUB downward beneath DUCTION to communicate the interaction of geological plates and create visual tension.

  • Contrast and Legibility

Balancing the irregular movement of SUB with the stronger horizontal structure of DUCTION, preserving readability while introducing a sense of physical displacement.

  • Regional Color Identity

Using green and blue to reference the Cascadia region and visually distinguish the interacting elements of the wordmark.

  • Flexible Logo Applications

Developing versions with and without the descriptive tagline, A Cascadia Spoken Word & Performance Series, to accommodate different formats and communication needs.

The Result: The final SubDuction logo establishes a distinctive identity for the spoken-word and performance series, translating a regional geological process into a typographic composition.

By incorporating movement and overlap directly into the wordmark, the design connects the series' name with its Cascadian setting while maintaining a bold, recognizable visual presence across print and digital applications.

What This Project Demonstrates:

  • Translating a scientific and regional concept into visual form

  • Using typography as an expressive visual metaphor

  • Creating movement and tension through overlapping letterforms

  • Balancing conceptual expression with legibility

  • Developing adaptable logo variations for cultural programming
