Cascadian Zen on Quadra Island
Client: Adelia MacWilliam, Watershed Press, Vancouver, British Columbia
Timeline: July-August 2024
Format: 8.5 x 11 poster, web banner
Overview: For the Quadra Island launch of Cascadian Zen: Volume One, I designed a poster and web banner tailored to a quieter, community-centered audience. The event emphasized literary conversation and place-based reflection, requiring a visual approach that felt measured, legible, and respectful of context.
Design Approach: The design centers on a geographic map of Quadra Island, grounding the event firmly in place and reinforcing the book’s bioregional themes. A restrained color palette and generous negative space create a calm visual field, while typography drawn directly from the book cover maintains continuity with the publication’s identity. The book itself is featured prominently but without visual dominance, allowing the surrounding map and textures to set the tone.
This approach prioritized clarity, readability, and subtlety—supporting an audience attuned to literary content, landscape, and contemplative engagement rather than overt promotion.
