Context: The Mid-Atlantic Women’s Motorcycle Rally (MAWMR) is an annual gathering of women motorcyclists dedicated to community building, inclusivity, and fundraising in support of women facing the challenges of cancer. The rally has raised significant funds for local organizations that provide direct emotional and financial assistance to women and their families.

Each year, the rally board selects a guiding theme that reflects the values and spirit of the community. The logo functions as a theme-specific event identity, serving as the visual anchor across posters, apparel, merchandise, and digital promotion.

The Challenge: The challenge was to design logos that could:

  • Clearly communicate each year’s theme and message

  • Feel bold, celebratory, and empowering

  • Translate effectively across posters, T-shirts, and merchandise

  • Maintain clarity and impact at multiple scales

The identity needed to be expressive and attention-grabbing, while still supporting MAWMR’s core commitments to inclusivity, diversity, and mutual respect.

The Solution: Each MAWMR logo was developed as a theme-driven event identity, intentionally allowing visual language to shift from year to year while maintaining confidence and cohesion across applications.

2018 — United Sisters of Moto

For the 2018 rally, the identity centered on custom hand lettering and typographic composition. Vintage-inspired display forms, star motifs, and a restrained red, antiqued white (cream), and blue palette reinforced the theme of unity and collective strength without relying on literal symbolism.

The composition emphasized hierarchy, rhythm, and ornamental structure, allowing letterforms to carry the message. Designed for impact and legibility, the logo translated effectively across posters, apparel, and merchandise for the rally’s anniversary year.

2017 – It’s an Attitude

The 2017 identity took a more illustrative approach, featuring a custom illustration of a vintage motorcycle paired with expressive hand lettering. A subtle devil’s tail motif underscored the theme’s playful defiance and individuality, reinforcing attitude without tipping into aggression.

Illustration and typography were designed as a unified composition, creating a bold, spirited mark that functioned consistently across posters, apparel, and event materials.

Key design decisions included

  • Theme-Led Identity Design

Allowing each year’s logo to respond directly to the rally’s annual message rather than enforcing a fixed mark.

  • Custom Typography and Lettering

Using hand lettering and typographic composition to convey strength, camaraderie, and personality.

  • Print-First Thinking

Designing with posters, apparel, and merchandise in mind, where clarity, durability, and visual impact are critical.

  • Expressive but Intentional Visual Language

Emracing bold, decorative elements in service of celebration and visibility, while maintaining legibility and structure.

The Result: The MAWMR event logos provided strong, memorable visual anchors for the 2017 and 2018 rallies. The designs translated effectively across print and digital materials, supporting fundraising, community engagement, and event visibility. The 2017 rally identity was especially well received by attendees, reinforcing the value of a theme-driven, expressive approach for community-based events.

What This Project Demonstrates:

  • Designing expressive, theme-driven event identities

  • Creating custom typographic logos for high-visibility use

  • Supporting nonprofit fundraising and community engagement through design

  • Translating values such as unity and inclusivity into visual form
