Winter in America (Again
Book Title:Winter in America (Again: Poets Respond to 2024 Election
Client: Paul E. Nelson & Katie Sarah Zale, Seattle, WA and Tucson, AZ
Timeline: December 2024-January 2025
Overview: Winter in America (Again is a multi-author poetry anthology created in response to contemporary events and cultural experience in the United States. The cover design needed to convey seriousness and reflection while remaining visually compelling across both print and digital contexts.
Design Approach: The cover combines weathered display typography with condensed sans-serif type to create a balance between expressive texture and editorial clarity. These typographic elements are layered over Goetia Study, an abstract mixed-media artwork by Jasper Hoffman, creating a dialogue between image and type while maintaining strong hierarchy and readability.
Particular attention was given to scale, contrast, and restraint, allowing the artwork to remain central while supporting the anthology’s title and editorial information. The resulting design is visually distinctive while remaining grounded, accessible, and adaptable across multiple formats.
Additional Collateral: In addition to the book cover, I designed a coordinated set of promotional materials, including posters, bookmarks, web banners, and social media graphics. These materials extended the visual language of the anthology across readings, events, and online promotion while maintaining consistency across print and digital applications.
The design approach developed for Winter in America (Again later informed a broader body of work for the follow-up anthology, Winter in America (Still, including website design, promotional materials, and additional print collateral. Together, the projects demonstrate how a flexible editorial design framework can evolve across multiple formats while maintaining continuity and recognition.
