Winter in America (Again
Book Title: Winter in America (Again: Poets Respond to 2024 Election
Client: Paul E. Nelson & Katie Sarah Zale, Seattle, WA and Tucson, AZ
Timeline: December 2024-January 2025
Overview: Winter in America (Again is a poetry anthology responding to the 2024 U.S. election—an urgent, reflective collection shaped by political tension, collective memory, and artistic resistance. The cover design needed to convey gravity and introspection while remaining visually compelling across both print and digital contexts.
Design Approach: The cover pairs eroded, weathered typography with sharp, condensed sans-serif type to create visual tension—echoing the book’s themes of fracture, endurance, and reckoning. The typographic contrast is layered over Goetia Study, an abstract, textured artwork by Jasper Hoffman, allowing image and type to coexist without overpower one another.
Careful attention was paid to hierarchy and restraint, ensuring the design felt solemn and grounded rather than overtly graphic or sensational. The result is a cover that invites contemplation while signaling the book’s contemporary relevance.
Additional Collateral: In addition to the book cover, I designed a coordinated set of promotional materials—including posters, bookmarks, web banners, and social media tiles—to maintain visual continuity across readings, events, and online platforms.
The visual language developed for Winter in America (Again was later extended to support Winter in America (Still, a follow-up anthology project. My work for Still included the design of a dedicated website to support a focused all for submissions, along with a printed bookmark, both carrying forward the established visual system.
